The communication with reception before arrival and the check-in experience were excellent. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The estate is beautiful, with a stunning foyer area, a lovely sculpture, and beautiful views of the pool and the Hawequa Mountains. Our room was neat, comfortable and peaceful, with a very comfortable bed and a relaxing atmosphere. The estate appears to be undergoing some renovations, which is understandable, but the carpets in the passages could do with some attention as they looked quite worn and not very clean. After our breakfast experience at the Grill Room, we decided not to dine there for dinner and instead had a lovely relaxed evening after getting takeaway. Breakfast was the biggest disappointment of our stay. The Grill Room did not seem fully prepared, and the service lacked warmth. The advertised full English breakfast was not what we expected, with limited variety and no real alternative for guests who do not eat pork. The food quality also needs attention, especially the hash browns, which were soggy and not inedible. The second morning was unfortunately similar, with some items appearing to have been reused from the previous day, including the garnish and devilled eggs, which did not seem fresh. We appreciated being granted a late check-out, which allowed us to enjoy the peaceful surroundings a little longer. It was a pity that the pizza restaurant was closed, as we had heard great things about it. Overall, Val du Charron is a beautiful estate with a peaceful setting, comfortable accommodation and stunning views. The reception experience and room were highlights of our stay. With some improvements to the breakfast offering and dining experience, this could truly be an exceptional destination.

After Mining Indaba, I decided to spend three days on wine therapy. This estate was my choice — and it delivered on almost every front. The wine was excellent. The food was outstanding — the lamb ribs in particular were remarkable. The staff were attentive and warm. And the views from the hotel, especially from the restaurant with its large corner window, were simply beautiful. Everything was wonderful. There was just one thing I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Despite all of this, the hotel itself didn’t feel entirely cosy. There was a certain emptiness to it — something was missing. Whether the walls felt a little thin, or the rooms needed more furniture, or something else entirely — I’m not sure. But the atmosphere lacked warmth in a way that’s hard to define but easy to feel. A beautiful place that just needs a little more soul on the inside to match everything it offers on the outside.
