Family-owned mountain winery on Blaauwklippen Road

About

De Trafford Wines is a family-owned boutique winery in Stellenbosch located on the eastern slopes of the Helderberg Mountain along Upper Blaauwklippen Road. Established in 1992 by David and Rita Trafford, our home vineyard on the Mont Fleur farm sits 393 meters above sea level on granitic-based soils. Our cellar focuses on red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc, produced using minimal intervention methods. We also bottle dedicated single-parcel Syrah from our steepest mountain section alongside select white and dessert wines. Visitors can join guided vineyard walks and cellar tours, followed by tastings in our indoor and outdoor seating areas.

You can tell from everything you see that this winery is focused primarily on producing wines of exceptional quality, rather than presenting a marketing story. I have never seen more technical detail about soils, terroir, vintages and tasting notes than at De Trafford. We booked a vineyard tour, done by David Trafford himself, and this offered the rare chance to get in touch with the architect of the wines himself and gain an insight in the process of creating these briliant wines. Afterwards we have done the tasting, and - being passionate about wine - I asked if we could do a little vintage tasting to experience the ageing potential of the wines. The lady kindly offered us to taste some older vintages and it turned out to be a very exciting comparison of younger vs aged wines. The word 'hidden gem' is used quite often these days, but if you are truly into the quality of the wine itself, the ageing potential and the complexity, then look no further. For me this is without a doubt the best boutique-winery in South-Africa.

What a fantastic personal experience. We were taken on a tour of the cellar by the winemaker. The tasting was very good and the wine as well.

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful drives one could have to a wine farm...it's at the end of a stunning valley...the nature & scenery is amazing...we were hosted by the owner who was kind & attentive...there were some good wines on offer & the tasting costs R250....this cost is absorbed if one buys some wine...you have a choice between whites, reds & desert wines...there is also a holiday cottage which is located in the middle of the vineyards...but again the nature & scenery is just phenomenal...it's also out of the way & not busy at all with an indoor & outdoor area for tasting...

A must visit wine estate if you’re in the area. I would recommend booking the vineyard walk and then a tasting after. Hendry took us for the vineyard walk and was super knowledgable and friendly. Superb wine tasting as well. 5 star experience !

Best wine tasting experience in our lives. Danielle was brilliant and she loves everything about wine. And of course the wines are exquisite. Highly recommend the library tasting.
