Hemel-en-Aarde Valley winery with platters and MCC
Bartho Eksteen Wine Estate is a winery in Hermanus located along the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley road. Our family-run estate produces handcrafted wines, including Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), poured directly in our tasting room. Visitors can pair our wine tastings with food platters and tapas prepared on-site. Seating is available both inside the tasting room and outside on the estate grounds. We welcome guests for cellar tastings throughout the week. We are closed Sundays.

The best wine tasting experience! Owner and wine maker an absolute fantastic host. Great platter and excellent wines. A must visit
Really really good experience. It’s not the most posh location, it’s not the shiniest setup. But it’s a family business, you will feel the passion.. you will taste the experience of the family and you will learn something. The food platter will be made by the mom of the family - great stuff (little spanish/south african mix) and wines will talk for them self. Highly recommend!
Our first stop in the Hemel en Aarde wine route. We specifically stopped for the MCC which is a easy drinking MCC with a subtle complexity. Something we really enjoyed. We had the surprise platter and although it sounded like it was a collection of leftovers, it did not disappoint, even if it was. Only downside was the outside seating area is next to the outside of the kitchen and dustbins separated by a wooden divide. Twice we had to endure staff taking out the trash and the sounds and smells associated with it. Seating inside is limited and can be noisy if there is a full house. Overall a good experience but ensure you get the right seats.
An interesting story inside. Don’t miss this winery and tasting. On approach I thought this could be interesting with a rather negative bias. I was reminded to never judge a book by its cover. Don’t be put off if you’re the only car there. Even better. Barto called son Pieter to attend to us. Well, a fountain of knowledge and most attentive Pieter was, sharing without hesitation and making the entire experience one not to be forgotten. There’s good pedigree here, with years of Bartho’s experience being passed down, and their input into the Wijnskool, a great idea. Loved the ‘crush dash’ story, the old mill and many others. Obviously we bought wine!. It’s good, and was delivered faultlessly in Joburg. Thanks Pieter.
